Description This is a set of 38 exquisite bronze medals struck by the US Mint at Philadelphia. Each medal is 3 inches in diameter and weighs about 8 oz. The composition is 90% copper and 10% zinc. The mint still strikes these medallions; they presently retail for $38 each. Each medal displays the president in a bas-relief portrait reflecting to artistic style of the time. The earliest presidents' portraits appear somewhat Georgian, while the later century (Lincoln, Grant et al.) has distinctly neo-classical quality. The pieces from the 1920s and 1930s are in an attractive Art Deco style, while the more recent portraits take on more modern sculptural characteristics. The set makes an attractive addition to an executive office, board room, business lobby, school or private family room or den. They are certain to attract attention and generate conversation. The bronze polishes up to a glossy, almost golden appearance. This set is complete from George Washington through Richard Nixon's first term. Some time in the 1950s, they began striking a separate medal for each presidential term, so there are two for Eisenhower and two for LBJ in this set. Grover Cleveland gets only one, despite his non-consecutive terms. (I believe Ronald Reagan got only one, as well). You can complete the set through the current sitting president (or not) from the Mint's catalog, and add future executives as their medals are released.
