Description
A great find for all you Mining Company Stocks collectors...EXCELSIOR Water and Mining Company $100 Stock cert. dated 1879. Issued to J.C. Barron. 100 shares. Cert. #4169. Excelsior was not well like in California. They used hydraulic mining and were blamed for practically ruining the city of Marysville, CA. The hydraulic mining caused the nearby St. Mary's river to clog up with gravel and dirt to the point that smaller steamships with 2 ft. draws couldn't safely navigate to their destination...slowing commerce drastically. The city had a "plain of about 25,000 acres risen to the height of 25 ft. because of all the debris". Flooding was occuring due to the river problems. Many complaints, involving legal actions, were hurled at this company. There was also, later, a conspiracy with fixed/altered stock prices involving numerous prominent people and companies. Wells Fargo stamps on reverse side. Cert. is in great condition. Nice and crisp. Nice signatures. A few pinholes at top left corner. Originally folded in 6ths...only one tiny rip on fold at top edge (approx.1/8"). Some yellowing. Pretty vignette of American Indian sitting on his horse. "Works in Yuba & Nevada Counties, CA".
