Chgo St Louis & N.O. Railroad 1877 sign Fish $1000 Bond Shipping Info (Click to Enlarge) (Click to Enlarge) Unusual collaboration of four states Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee and Kentucky and two railroads, New Orleans, Jackson and Northern Railroad and Central Mississippi Railroad to secure payment of the CHICAGO, ST. LOUIS AND NEW ORLEANS RAILROAD COMPANY. This oversized (approx. 26" x 17" including coupons) $1,000 engraved bond is in excellent condition and dated December 1, 1877. Signed twice by Stuyvesant Fish once on front as secretary and also on back as trustee. Fish was a railroad executive and banker, eventually rose to presidency of Illinois Central Railroad but was deposed after he antagonized powerful financiers including Edward Harriman. Fish was accused of misusing funds. Also president of Belleville & Southern Ill.; Dunleith & Dubuque Bridge; Mississippi Valley; Omaha Bridge & Tunnel Rwy.; Peoria Decatur & Mattoon; Yazoo & MIssissippi Valley; Illinois Central RR; Yazoo & Mississippi Valley and trustee of Iowa Falls & Sioux City. The company paid one interest payment before it was forced to merge. The remaining 59 of the original 60 coupons are attached and punch hole cancelled. September 2002, Strasburg Stock and Bond Auction, presale estimate for this same bond was $100-$150!! Excellent condition. Engraved by National Banknote Co. NY US Buyer pays $2 postage.
