Description A Collectible Certificate from the   CLEVELAND, CINCINNATI, CHICAGO & ST LOUIS RAILWAY COMPANY    This is a $1000.00 Gold Bearer Bond !!!   When issued in 1890 these Certificates were virtually the same as Cash because they were payable to whoever happened to possess them - hence the term "Bearer" Bond - in GOLD !   This Historic Railroad Line was created in 1889 by the merger of Four Large Midwest Railways and quickly acquired the name: BIG FOUR RAILWAY !!! Big Surprise, Right? It had only a brief history as an Independent since it was acquired by that Giant the New York Central in 1906.  But it kept its name and a degree of Individual Identity until the 1920s.  Their Most Famous is the enigmatic "Reapers" (1893) and the last bond that I know they issued was in 1927.  BOTH are available here too in MY eBAY STORE !  There you will also find a Certificate from one of their Subsidiaries - The Peoria & Eastern Railway - which was formed in 1890 and on that same day surrendered operation and control to the CCC&StL, although it kept issuing its own stock into the 1970s. This Collectible is - as far as I know - their FIRST GOLD BOND and is MORE RARE than most of their others. In the Central Vignette an Old-Time Stovepipe Locomotive with a Huge Cow-Catcher is steaming past us along a shoreline.  You'll notice that the Hole Cancellations - which are on all this type of Bond in one form or another - are at the bottom and do NOT impinge at all on the Vignette.   You really need to see this Up Close!
