BEST OFFER LISTING World War II souvenir of USO show, Autographs of Carole Landis, Jack Benny, and Larry Adler on a 1942 Australia One Pound Note (Pick#26b). CAROLE LANDIS. Born in poverty as Frances Ridste, Carole Landis (1919-1948) adopted her stage name in honor of Carole Lombard, her favorite actress. She played minor parts for Warner Bros. in the late 1930s, until her role in One Million B.C. (1940) made her a star. Possessing both a stunning figure (which made her a favorite World War II pinup) and a fine singing voice, she starred or co-starred in films of the early 1940s, including 1941's Moon Over Miami and I Wake Up Screaming. During World War II, nobody in Hollywood was as dedicated to overseas USO tours as Landis, who contracted dysentery and malaria while boosting the morale of the troops. Her account of her wartime travels, Four Jills in a Jeep, was later made into a film. Landis was linked romantically with many big Hollywood names, including Busby Berkeley, Daryl Zanuck, Charlie Chaplin and Rex Harrison, who discovered her, dead of a drug overdose and apparent suicide according to some at age 29. She has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. JACK BENNY. (born Benjamin Kubelsky 1894-1974) A vaudeville comedian Benny hosted a popular radio show from 1933, moving The Jack Benny Program smoothly to TV (1950-1965). His comic image as a tone-deaf, penny-pinching bachelor contradicted the real Benny, a philanthropist, devoted husband and competent violinist. He appeared in over 25 movies, the most critically acclaimed being To Be Or Not To Be (1942). LARRY ADLER. (1914-2001, born Lawrence Cecil Adler in Baltimore, Maryland) was widely acknowledged as the world's best harmonica player and brought new credibility to the instrument. Starting humbly in vaudeville, Adler moved on to movie roles, beginning with Many Happy Returns (1934). He entertained troops during World War II. Adler performed works by Bach and Vivaldi and even inspired works to be written for his instrument by major composers, Vaughan Williams and others. On his 80th birthday, he released an album of songs by George Gershwin. Adler was unfairly blacklisted in the US during the McCarthy era, but attracted a large following in Europe. Reportedly, his fan club numbered 300,000 members! Please see scan(s) or e-mail with questions.
