Description
PIETILA Store Bold XF+ May 22, 1777 $1/24 Rhode Island Colonial Note A very rare and seldom seen $1/24 (or Three Pence) May 22, 1777 Rhode Island Small Change Colonial Note. These notes circulated heavily in Colonial Times and very few have survived. Checking with Heritage's Auction Archives, which go back about 7 years, they have sold only one note. They sold that same note twice; once in June 2006 for $2,300 and then again in September 2008 for $2,185. Heritage also references that they sold another example for $1,500 long ago. Stacks, of course, had the Ford example in October 2006, along with two other examples in their archives. That comes to six different notes (including this one) that I'm aware-of, with perhaps an equal number out there somewhere. PMG has slabbed just two notes according to their Population Report (one is the Heritage note mentioned above and the other is one of the Stack notes also previously mentioned). I would not be surprised if there are less than a dozen notes in total (in all grades) of this denomination existing today. This particular example I'm offering is choice with just a few tiny pin holes and a couple of light corner folds. There are no tears of any kind, no center folds, no holes of any significance, and no restoration attempts. There are two minor stain spots seen only on the blank reverse and are of no particular significance. Bold embossing still remains on this type-set note with blank back (as all notes of this issue are). Printed on fine laid paper with ornaments all-around. Serial number 7849 and signature of Welcome Arnold (yes, his first name was "Welcome") are hand-signed in brown ink. An original and genuine example of our early monetary history and if you appreciate rare historical monetary items - this would be for you. Newman's new Fifth Edition of The Early Paper Money of America lists a value of $1,500 in XF condition. Successful bidder will receive FREE insured 1st Class USPS shipping/handling to anywhere in the United States. View My Other Items For Sale, you may find something interesting!
