Ink residue on wood, in some cases paper has been applied to back to increase height slighly when used in a press. These were probably used for illustrations in the American Journal of Numismatics or the 1957 Centennial History edition. Very nice for a desk paperweight. A very nice letterpress cut. For size reference there is part of a 6" ruler in the scan, and each block is just over  2-3/4 by 2-1/2 inches, with a type-high height of about 15/16 inch. Condition as found.
