Description
You are purchasing a complete collection of US mint Proof sets from 1955-2007. Here is a complete breakdown of what you will be receiving.....   First, lets explain what a proof set actually is..... "Proof" struck coins are coins struck with highly polished dyes, and minted with double the pressure. The result is a coin with a pristine mirror like image, not seen in any other coinage. Widely considered the best looking, and highest quality coins, proof coins are an amazing investment / collectible for all.   A "proof set" is a set of all mainstream coins from any specific year using the above described minting. Each year the mint issues these specially minted sets, and a wonderful peice of Americana is born.   Now here is that complete breakdown of what you will receive.....   1960-1964 "Flat Pack" Era: Starting in 1955 The US Mint began issuing their annual proof sets in a letter sized tan - brown envelope. These sets came complete with plastic enclosed proof coins. These "flat pack" proof sets continued on until 1965, when the mint did not issue any proof sets.   This specific collection will have all flat packs from 1960-1964 included. I have the earlier sets available in seperate items if interested.   Special items in this era.... 1) all sets were made of 90% silver. No proof set was made this way again until the 1992 premier silver proof set was released.   2) 1958 marked the end of the "wheat cent". The Lincoln memorial penny as we know it today was introduced in 1959.   3) The Franklin half dollar run ended with the death of president Kennedy in 1963. The 1964 proof set marked the debut for the Kennedy half dollar still used today. This is also the only regular proof set issue silver Kennedy half dollar.     1965-1967 Special mint sets: While no proof sets were issued during this time, the US mint did issue specially made "mint" sets never made before or since. The 1965 is similar to the "flat packs" although issued in a white envelope. 1966-67 featured mint sets in a row case format. These sets are still highly valued to this date. All three of these sets will be included in your collection.   1968-1972 Issued in blue boxes and black acrylic holders. These 5 coin proof sets marked the debut of the modern proof set format.   1973-1978 With the debut of the first silver dollars in nearly 50 years (the Dwight Eisenhower dollar), these sets were issued in newer, more advanced acrylic holders. They all feature black packaging, and the set itself has a black hard plastic display fold out.    Special sets.... in 1975 and 1976 the US mint celebrated the bicentennial by issuing special reverses on the dollar, half dollar, and quarter. To this day, these may be the most famous proof sets out there.   1979-1982 The Susan B. Anthony silver dollar replaced the Eisenhower in these sets. The 1979 debut set is the most valuable, and the 1982 features a rare mint medallion in place of the ended silver dollar program.   1983 This proof set was issued identically to the 1968-1972 sets. Some believe it was made from unused supplies from the "blue box" era.   1984-1993 These sets feature a royal purple package and acrylic case. The most valuable set in this era comes from 1986 due to low mintage amount.   1994-1998 The "green box" era marked the lowest mintage since the early 60's. The lack of coin collector's forced a low mintage, and these are the most valuable post 1960 sets pre state quarter program. The 1997 set is the most valuable, followed closely by the 1995 set. If you are an investor, I strongly suggest collecting as many of these sets as you can get your hands on.   1999 State Quarters! The hobby of coin collecting was changed forever with this set. For the first time ever there were 5 quarters in their own separate acrylic, and the state quarter program was born.   2000-2006 The state quarters continued on, adding 5 each year. What makes these sets different than the 1999 set is the appearance of the Sacagawea Golden Dollar. The Golden Dollar was the first $1 coin issued in over 2 decades.   2007: For the first time ever the proof set had not 1, not 2, but three acrylic lens' filled with 14 beautiful coins. Added to the regular issue and state quarters, this year features the first 4 coins of the Presidential Golden Dollar series.     Photo: The photo in this item is a stock photo provided to me by the 3rd party supplier I am using to sell this item.
