1949 SOM #39 Genesis, Weinman, LIMITED LARGE SILVER ED Start Price USD 399.95 Current Price USD 399.95 Time Left - Bid Count 0 Buy It Now Price - Reserve Price - Start Time Tuesday, August 26, 2008 End Time Tuesday, September 02, 2008 Location Jacksonville, FL See more about '1949 SOM #39 Genesis, Weinman, LIMITED LARGE SILVER ED ' Description This is a GIANT EXTREMELY RARE 82 mm (3 ¼ inch!!) in diameter, 343 gram (12.1 ounce) 999 fine PURE SILVER re-strike of the Society of Medalists 39th issue, from 1949, Genesis/Web of Destiny.  This is more than twice as heavy as the original bronze issue.  The edge is marked SPECIAL EDITION.  It does NOT say “One of a limited edition of 700” as on the original 1955 silver issue.  NONE were issued in silver in 1949.  This edition was part of a COINAGE Sculptors group from 1993, sort of a last gasp of the SOM.  The SOM was essentially defunct by 1996.  This powerful work was sculpted by Adolph A. Weinman (1870-1952).  Even at the age of 79, this Art Nouveau master (who designed the Mercury Dime, Walking Liberty Half, and 1904 St. Louis Exposition Prize Medal) proved that he was on the top of his form.  The obverse shows God with a nude male Adam.  The reverse shows Fate weaving a long bolt of cloth.  As with all SOM issues, this was struck by the Medallic Arts Company (MACO),  It is in CHOICE MINT Condition.  A copy of the 1949 insert will be provided.  As noted, this is an EXTREMELY RARE medal and I have only seen TWO this version offered on eBay in the last five years.  I will combine postage for winning bidders of multiple items.  Look at my other auctions for more Medals.    Any questions?
