Description
Offered for your consideration: Union Bank of South Carolina 2 share certificate made out to the Ladies Benevolent Society. Signed by Bank President (Robert?)Godard. Embossed seal in lower left. Measures about 7.25 by 8.25 inches. Has two tears one to right of the TWO in script and small one to left of the printed word Witness; however, can handle with normal care. See last image for watermark. I accidentally cut off top of Dove head when I cropped the image; however, it is complete. The watermark is centered left and right and starts with dove at center of the X cancellation and ends with letters even with Godard’s signature. There is a Dove of Peace holding a sprig or branch of acacia in beak. Measures about 1.5 tall by 2 inches wide. Just below it in block letters are two lines; CONGRESS and below that U S. All in caps block letters with a large space between the U and the S. The two lines are about 3 inches wide by 1.5 inches tall. Shows well when backlit. The Union Bank of South Carolina was one of two original banks in the state of South Carolina. In addition, the Bank was one of the first chartered banks in the United States. It was chartered/opened in 1810. I have seen references to 1782; however, believe that refers to a Union Bank in New England. Some say it was chartered in 1820. However, the Bank Seals in lower left corner of their Share Certificates have an 1810 date. Remember that Charleston rivaled New York, Boston and Philadelphia as a major center of commerce in the 1700s and up to the Civil War. The Union Bank of South Carolina was a victim of the 1870s Reconstruction Era and Depression; dissolved in 1879. Last Union Bank of South Carolina certificate I will be offering; If any more are offered, they will be few and far between. Want to keep apprised of future offerings?
