Auction Title: ~ 1776 Pewter Continental Dollar "Currency" NCS / NGC ~ Starting Bid: $18,850 Description: This auction is for a 1776 Pewter Continental Dollar. This lovely example is Crosby P1, VIII, 16, Newman 2-C, Breen-1092 with the "Currency" spelling. The 1776 Continental Dollar is the only coin to combine the 1776 date with the impressive size of a silver dollar. Little is know of the exact purpose of these coins but they are believed to have been made by Elisha Gallaudet, a New Jersey engraver, with suggestions from the likes of Benjamin Franklin and David Rittenhouse (later, the first Director of the United States Mint). Patterns were struck in brass, tin, copper, and silver with quantities of circulating coins struck in pewter. The pewter had little intrinsic value but was still more solid than the paper used to make the Continental Currency Notes. It is believed that the coins were intended to be of the weight and composition to match the Spanish Silver 8 Reales coins then in circulation but the early United States Government was unable to secure a loan of silver. Today the 1776 Continental Dollar is a reminder of the struggles of the early US and any examples that have survived the past 231 years are eagerly sought by collectors. The lightly circulated example offered here has been certified AU50 Corroded by NCS. This coin has superb eye appeal with even gunmetal-gray surfaces and hints of original mint luster. This coin is less corroded than many NGC & PCGS coins we have seen and is among the best in overall eye appeal that we have handled. These 1776 Continental Dollars are consistent winners that seem to double in value every few years. This is a wonderful specimen, the likes of which would be difficult to beat for under $20K.
